5 New York City Condo Developments That Turn Heads

The Original Supermodel

Barely a year old, but already showing its age, One57 is the first Midtown super-tower to strut its stuff. Designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc, the 1,000-foot-high structure has 75 stories and 92 condos, most of them sold. The up-and-comers are fierce, though: A South American beauty (see next entry) is already poised to take its place as top model.

The South American Glamazon

Designed by the celebrated Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, 432 Park Avenue is in active sales mode and well on its way to being the next big thing: The 96-story building will rise 1,396 feet, making it the tallest residential tower in New York upon its completion in 2015. The 8,255-square-foot, six-bedroom penthouse is asking $82.5 million.

The Curvaceous Goddess

No slim silhouettes here! Let’s not forget that plus sizes are more popular than ever, particularly in gluttonous America. Proving that skinny doesn’t always win the race, architect Zaha Hadid’s first building in New York City, 520 West 28th Street, will debut with 37 two- to five-bedroom condominiums, courtesy of the Related Companies.

The Angular Beauty

Cheekbones that could cut glass might find competition in actual cut-glass walls at 35XV, a new building at 35 West 15th Street with interiors designed by Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz. A 2,400-square-foot three-bedroom on the 19th floor is still available for $7.1 million in the nearly finished structure, where almost all units are in contract.

The Coltish American All-Star

A little gawky, a little awkward, and laughing all the way to the bank, JDS’s waif-like new condo development at 111 West 57th Street is scheduled to rise 1,350 feet from its 60-foot-wide base. (That’s 100 feet taller than the Empire State Building—talk about having legs!) This beauty’s young, and brainy to boot.
