The centerpiece of the amphitheater is a sculptural firestone quarried locally and carved by Santa Cruz artist Peter Hanson. Plantings include such ground covers as thatching reed (Thamnochortus insignis), sedge (carex pansa) and a variety of succulents
A barrel-shaped sauna is a hillside highlight.
A water feature designed by Bernard Trainor & Associates was built by Peter Hanson and Habitat Gardens. Soaking tubs, an old tradition in Big Sur, were placed near the meditation area, outdoor shower, rock fountain and hillside sauna.
A variety of shrubs, including Pacific wax myrtle (Myrica californica), coffee berry (Rhamnus californica), Australian tea tree (Leptospermum laevigatum) and Showy Honey Myrtle (Melaleuca nesophila), line the dry creek walk.
A pathway of gravel and recycled timber steps leads to an oceanview terrace. Plantings include California lilac (Ceanothus “Yankee Point”) and Australian Saltbush (Rhagodia spinescens).
A modern-day amphitheater was created with curved walls of Enz fieldstone.
A variety of succulents abound in the rocky environment.
