Chairman of a UK Football Club Lists London Mansion for Nearly $95M

One of the largest single-family homes in central London has hit the market. Owned by billionaire David Sullivan, chairman of West Ham United Football Club, the 20,987-square-foot residence would be a huge score for someone with the net worth to purchase it as it’s asking a hefty £75 million, or roughly $93.75 million.

If you’re a soccer (oops, football) fan, then the prestige and wealth on and around UK pitches should be no groundbreaking news to you. Most recently, even those without a deep devotion to the sport got a closer look at the UK’s larger-than-life football fandom and culture through Netflix’s Beckham. So, it wasn’t a stretch for Sullivan to pick this impressive property up in 2015.

And, what makes it so lavish besides its size? Well, it starts with the street even. Unusually wide for this part of London, Portland Place immediately establishes a sprawling and grand atmosphere. Add in the circa-1775 home’s 250 years of history, in which it welcomed figures like military engineer John Montresor and the 4th Earl of Abergavenny, and the foundation is securely set for a stately London house meant to be shown off. And, it has been. It was used for filming in films like The King’s Speech and Amy Winehouse.

Though it has earned its rank in the city as a famed historic home, the property is noticeably current and fashion-forward as it emerges onto the market. In recent years, luxury design firm 1508 London renovated every corner to make it turk-key while preserving its good bones. Wandering through the reception rooms or 11 bedrooms, you can spot bespoke joinery, stunning marble, hand-painted wallpapers, and artisanal chandeliers right alongside elegant period details.

James Gubbins, United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty holds the listing.
