Community Canvases

Residents of Litchfield's Washington community gathered to view portraits of themselves and their neighbors in a new exhibit at Waterbury's Mattatuck Museum of Art.

“Norman Sunshine: The Conversation Pieces”
portrays Sunshine’s neighbors in scenes painted in their homes and at local get togethers.

On exhibit for the first time since museum director Bob Burns came across them stored at the artist’s home, Sunshine’s portraits fill two rooms of the museum’s Whittemore Gallery. Along with the artist noticing his own self portrayals in some of the paintings, Bob and Susan Summers and realtor Carolyn Klemm saw their visages posted on the walls among renderings of Brooke Hayward and Peter Duchin, David Calley, Lady Sandra Lean, William Hammerstein.
