The Swedish-born star found a quiet haven in her brother’s scenic villa, located on Ingarö Island in Stockholm county. It’s easy to see why Garbo felt at home in the charming yellow house. Sitting on 2.6 acres of landscaped grounds, the 3,046-square-foot abode offers a large terrace with serene water views and multiple French balconies. Inside, natural light pours into open spaces to create an airy and elegant atmosphere. According to Mansion Global, the Hollywood icon made improvements to the 1929-built home—designing the basement as a game room and carving historical Swedish figures into the walls.Titti Johansson and Anna Ellingsen Barron of Wrede have the historic listing. Meanwhile, back in the United States Garbo’s longtime New York City apartment recently sold for $8.5 million, which is well over the original asking price of $5.95 million.
Carvings of King Gustav Vasa still adorn the basement walls.
