A West 113th Street house where the famous magician Harry Houdini lived with his wife, Bess, is in contract and will soon disappear from the market. The Hungary-born escapist called the four-story townhouse home for 22 years until his death in 1926 on Halloween day.According to Curbed, the 18th century home was listed in June of 2017 for the first time since 1991 and initially asked $4.6 million. Most recently, the price was reduced to $3.6 million, but it is unclear if that will be the final amount after closing. The listing currently shows that a contract has been signed. The seller of the 4,608-square-foot piece of history changed the layout of the house substantially from when the great Houdini resided there. It is now a three-family home with an owner’s two-bedroom duplex on the first two floors, a one-bedroom unit on the third floor, and a two-bedroom unit on the fourth floor. A new owner may choose to restore the pristine abode to its former single-family glory, or capitalize on the opportunity to rent apartments out.Beverley Draggon, Detria Davu, and Mairin Din of Douglas Elliman have the enchanting listing.
Unique details of the historic abode include a small balcony that sits above the charming portico at the front entrance.
