When this stunning Bay Area home—originally designed by iconic Bay Area modernist Donald Olsen—was in need of renovation, interior designer Michael Merrill that ensured even the long-neglected master bathroom received thoughtful consideration. To preserve the original footprint but give the owners added privacy, Merrill closed off the deck and replaced open walls with opaque glass. He further updated the space with full-height doors and skylights, and replaced dated windows. To maintain emphasis upon the architecture, Merrill chose an all-white palette for the walls, floors and cabinetry, and selected an austere BainUltra Origami tub. Modern comforts include a spacious steam shower and heated floors. The polished chrome fittings are Dornbracht; the custom cabinets are by Segale Brothers; vanity top and tub deck are Caesarstone; floor tiles are Geologica; gold wall tiles are Country Floors.
Sited in the hills of Clarendon Heights, this bathroom originally sported an awkward, triangular layout. Interior designer Geoffrey De Sousa partnered with architect Lorissa Kimm and Upscale Construction to surmount the unique space-planning challenge while respecting historic Bay Area architect Clarence Mayhew’s original design. De Sousa chose a palette that visually extends the space into its foggy surroundings and created the custom floor by cutting Pietra Fina marble slabs into a mixed pattern of tiles in soft tones; the walls and lacquered Downsview cabinetry are in Benjamin Moore’s Dove White; and the floors are checkered in gray and white tile. The angular Blu Bathworks tub and shower are positioned to soak up the sweeping view. Fixtures are Hansgrohe’s Axor Collection.
For a client who enjoys a relaxing soak, interior designer Alden Miller was commissioned to create a luxurious space incorporating a superbly comfortable tub. Miller set an Aquatica Plumbing asymmetrical stone resin tub against a backdrop of glossy navy blue tile, and suspended a lunar light fixture by Fabbian above. Part of a larger renovation project with Liebes Architects, the space showcases industrial elements like leaded windows from Torrance Steel Window Company and textured glass fabricated by Paige glass. Fixtures are Kohler; wall tile is by Waterworks.
As part of a visionary home in Carmel Valley’s Santa Lucia Preserve, this master bathroom needed to share its extraordinary materiality and scale. Designed by ODADA principal Greg Stewart, the six-by-six-foot shower features a 15-foot ceiling, two book-matched Calacatta Oro slabs and honed French limestone.
The fabulous ceiling features integral-color limestone plaster and a large skylight that can be fully opened to transform the light court into an outdoor oasis. Polished nickel Easton fixtures are by Waterworks. Flooring is from Cooritalia.
With its great bones, planning by John Maniscalco Architecture and stunning Bay views, this space had the perfect foundation for a serene bathroom. Interior designer Nicole Hollis set out to infuse the room with warmth and glamour, selecting a palette of gray and taupe that creates a seamless connection with the outdoors (a Rogers & Goffigon Roman Shade also lends a soft touch and frames the view). Hand-applied integral plaster walls and organic accents—including a root chair from Indonesia and an African beaded headdress—add soul. Cabinetry is custom by the architect; tub is from Duravit.
The owners of a Presidio Heights home called upon Web-based interiors company Decorist and its head of design services, Chrissy Burgess, to transform a small bedroom into a fabulous bathroom. The result? A space Burgess calls “simplicity at its best.” The stylish monochromatic area features strong silhouettes: A classic Tulip table anchors the room; a bold, nine-foot vanity is topped by a white PentalQuartz slab; and a Wyndham Collection Mermaid tub stands on its own as sculpture. Sinks are WS Bath Collections; faucets are Whitehaus; sconces are Serena & Lily.
