An 18.5-Acre Private Island Off Darien Comes to Market for the First Time in Over 100 Years

A private island, well, peninsula technically, off Darien is on the market for the first time in over a century. Cynthia Ziegler, the granddaughter of American industrialist and Royal Baking Powder Company co-founder William Ziegler, is selling the waterfront property and it is the last remaining piece of the Ziegler family’s property in Connecticut. According to Mansion Global, Cynthia Ziegler and her husband are moving south.

Hay Island spans 18.5 acres and sits just off the coast of the mainland, offering epic Long Island Sound views. The tree-dotted grounds include a 8,684-square-foot main residence, a two-bedroom guest house, and a pool house. Built in 2010 and designed by architect Mac Patterson of Austin Patterson Disston, the central three-story Colonial includes six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. It has a traditional, coastal design and is incredibly bright thanks to all the windows. Large expanses of glass, balconies, a veranda, and outdoor living spaces all encourage you to be immersed in the peaceful natural scenery.

Two beaches, an infinity pool, expansive lawns, a garden, and a dock cement it as a New England summer paradise. Buyers can just imagine the potential barbecues and get-togethers this property has in store. The secluded property also offers privacy while being close to diverse hotspots. It’s only a 10 minute drive to Darien’s downtown area, or a zippy helicopter ride to Manhattan or the Hamptons. Priced at $35 million, a buyer who can afford the estate would surely be able to travel in style.

Connecticut islands draw major attention when they list, and this one is no exception. Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby’s International Realty holds the rare listing.
