A Golden Age Hollywood Couple’s Longtime L.A. Paradise Seeks $11M

At the height of the mid-century modern movement, Los Angeles was abuzz. Many movie stars and Hollywood moguls lived suavely in the lap of luxury in new, stylish houses. One of them was Stanley Rubin, a major screenwriter and television producer of the 20th-century. The first-ever winner of an Emmy for television (in 1949), Rubin had this home designed by Richard Frazer in 1956. Now on the market for only the second time, the spot is asking nearly $11 million.

Rubin and his wife, Kathleen Hughes, were a star couple of the ‘Golden Age’ in Hollywood, having both been responsible for some of the era’s biggest hits—him as a producer and her as an actress. The couple lived in this home together until Rubin’s passing in 2014, but Hughes only sold the home just last year. According to an article from The Robb Report, Hughes sold the Bird Streets area home for almost $5 million to Philippe Naouri of Maison d’Artiste. Naouri gave it a generous renovation, so the home’s new asking price is more than double what he paid.

Combining clean lines and harmony with the outdoors, the home holds all the allure of a classic mid-century modern plus bright, contemporary finishes throughout. The front entrance invites visitors in through a bright orange door, giving way to a main room lined with floor-to-ceiling walls of glass. Sweeping Los Angeles views can be seen from virtually anywhere in the house. Adding to the organic feel, natural stone work abounds all through the 3,500 square foot home. As you wander through the interiors, it’s very clear why Rubin and Hughes didn’t part ways for over 60 years.

A total of four bedrooms and four bathrooms make it perfect for a Hollywood star to settle into, or even for a family looking to live in a unique, L.A. home. The outdoors is also at one’s fingertips here, too, with a pool, a built-in hot tub, and a patio space for dining al fresco awaiting.

Weston Littlefield and Alex Howe of Christie’s International Real Estate are representing the the listing, appearing only for its second time on the market.
