Architect Deborah Berke Skillfully Reimagined This Rye Midcentury Modern Now Asking $5M

Just along the New York-Connecticut border sits the town of Rye, where a renovated modern has just come to the market for $4.95 million. Built in 1969 at the peak of the mid-century movement, the house on Pilgrim Road has only been owned by two people in its 56-year lifespan. And, following a stunning redesign by renowned architect Deborah Berke, the home is more alluring than ever.

Berke, Founding Principal of NYC-based TenBerke, and builder David Prutting took the project on back in 2014. The architect used nature as inspiration for the renovation, bringing in warm mahogany as a contrast to the concrete and stucco throughout. Currently a professor at the Yale School of Architecture as well, Berke has been bestowed some of the finest honors in architecture and to live within her designs is quite special. Back in 2016, Berke was named the Hamptons IDAs Innovator of the Year. In 2024, she was given the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects, their highest honors, as well as named to AD100’s 2025 Hall of Fame.

The Rye project was not only a renovation of the interiors, but also included a two-story addition. The redesign was awarded the 2015 AIA Westchester & Hudson Valley Design Award for Historic Revitalization—breathing in fresh beauty while respecting and elevating the mid-century modern design.

Framed with large walls of glass around the perimeter, beautiful interiors adorned with the finest finishes make the 6,500 square foot home a true retreat among the peaceful outdoors. An open-concept main floor ties the sleek kitchen and living areas together, while five bedrooms and five bathrooms sit in separate wings to enjoy ultimate tranquility. A full fitness center sits on the lower level of the home, while a pool and expansive alfresco dining areas poise the property for easy indoor-outdoor living.

Stacey Rechler and Judy Zhou of Douglas Elliman bring this modern gem to the market.
