Joshua Tree in California, known for its picturesque rock formations and desert flora, is an unforgettable place for those lucky enough to visit. Even luckier though, are the people who get to call Joshua Tree home. Renowned sculptor Alma Allen was one of those people, blending his keen eye for shape, light, and form to design this creative live/work retreat. Now, the property Allen crafted is on the market for the first time ever asking $2,950,000.
The artist has spent much of his professional career in Joshua Tree and has been featured in many publications. Some of his sculptures can be seen currently on the New York City High Line, and he recently presented some new bronze works at Miami Art Basel.
But, perhaps his largest work of art is this Joshua Tree home, which served as his personal residence and studio. Seamlessly sited in the rugged land around it, the home is encased in two hand built stone walls, creating an ultra tranquil and private oasis. The inside of the home ties into the environment around it as well, featuring tons of natural wood and cement while as well as large sliding glass doors that open into the serene courtyard or out to mountain views.
While Allen sold this home in a private transaction a few years ago, the current sellers have kept many of his personal touches intact like his furnishings, custom cabinet hardware, and metalwork. Across the nearly 2,800-square-foot home, it’s clear to see that the open concept home was the product of close attention to detail and appreciation for special materials—a nod to Allen’s sculpting methods as well.
A total of three bedrooms and three bathrooms round out the private spaces, while additional spaces can serve as studios or offices. Also on the property is a Quonset structure, which at its core is for industrial use, but serves as yet another unique design choice on the land. The natural landscapes of Joshua Tree are a wonder in and of itself, and this home only adds to that magnificence.
