While Tribeca and SoHo attract all sorts of residents now, decades ago these downtown areas used to mainly be stomping grounds for artists. Within the old buildings and warehouses, airy lofts provided creatives with plenty of space to live, work, and congregate with ease.
Today, artistic souls still find themselves drawn to the character, beautiful architecture, and quirky residences these neighborhoods hold. For example, famous surrealist Meghan Boody has a vibrant penthouse loft in Tribeca. Boody, whose work is part of the Whitney Musuem collection, has spent years layering her home with a variety of eccentric patterns, colors, and, of course, her own bold pieces. The time has come for a new adventure, however, and the artist just listed it for $5.3 million.
Curbed reports that Boody plans to sell it and move to France. She shared with the publication, “I don’t know if you realize this, but you can buy a chateau in France for the price of a one-bedroom apartment in New York.”
However, her NYC residence is no basic, one-bedroom pad. Perched atop a five-story 1864 Italianate co-op building, the dramatic unit is defined by its 800-square-foot, sun-drenched great room. It’s as natural to have dinner parties in this space as it is to put up a huge canvas and work on a painting. As one would expect, the entire residence is flexible in terms of its potential uses. A new owner could enjoy up to three bedrooms, or just keep the primary suite as the sole accomodations and make the others into a dedicated studio or hidden bar.
There’s also outdoor space to relish in, which is a lovely city delight to have in springtime. Imagine sipping coffee on the penthouse’s private rooftop terrace, where the sights and sounds of Manhattan abound. If inspiration strikes, you can go right downstairs and put pen to paper or brush to canvas.
With highly-anticipated galleries relocating to Tribeca soon, it’s a great time for artists to find their home sweet home here. Erin Boisson Aries and Nic Bottero of Douglas Elliman represent this gem of a listing.
