The Art Basel show at the Miami Covention Center has become merely the centerpiece for activities spanning the city and several days—more than a week before it opens on Wednesday, auxiliary events sprout all over town. I missed the activities that took place over last weekend, but got here Monday and went straight to Alcova—a show bringing together institutions and emerging brands, diverse design studios, and a cross-section of emerging talents. Amazing exhibits set up in the motel rooms showed off cutting edge design and projects. The “marvel of architecture” Selina Gold Dust Motel in the historic MiMo Biscayne district was the setting.
I talked with Adarsh Nellore who had brought from Brooklyn the “Unobjects” furniture and art pieces he designed via algorithms, which lasers translated from recycled nylon into into forms, showing that man and machines can collaborate.
