What do actresses Reese Witherspoon and Katie Holmes have in common with Sex and the City writer Candace Bushnell, lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, and late icon Princess Diana? They’ve all sat in the chair of late hairstylist John Barrett, whose eponymous salon sits on East 57th Street. Barrett, who passed away last summer after a battle with blood cancer, lived just across town on West 56th Street—less than a mile from his salon. His inviting, art-filled residence is now on the market for $1,995,000.
For years, Barrett’s elite salon occupied the prestigious penthouse of Bergdorf Goodman, leading him to coin the term “Bergdorf Blonde.” The stylist to the stars didn’t only have a terrific eye for hairdos, however, but also for interiors. In 2019, his two-bedroom, two-bathroom home was featured in Architectural Digest, showing his fine taste and ability to lean into maximalism. He scored his grand piano in an auction at the original Tavern on the Green, furnished his dining room with an Indonesian wood table from the seventh floor at Bergdorf Goodman, and painted his bookshelves in a lime green high-gloss paint. Today, the listing still retains all the personality he created.
The apartment has an open floor plan, two bedrooms, and a private terrace ready for the magic of spring. It’s perched in the 1931-built Parc Vendome—a doorman building with gardens, a roof deck, and billiards, music, and banquet rooms—close to Central Park, Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center, Broadway, and, of course, the John Barrett Salon.
John Caraccioli and Harlan Simon of Brown Harris Stevens hold the Manhattan listing.
