In Connecticut’s coastal enclave of Rowayton, there is plenty of charm to be found. With a small-town, friendly feel and serene water views, the Fairfield County neighborhood is a hidden gem as a second home destination. Especially since it’s just an hour and a half from New York City.
Recently, an active family built their dream summer escape there, working with Cardello Architects to create something truly spectacular and singular to them. Interestingly, the project actually began under different ownership. When the lot changed hands, Cardello Architects didn’t skip a beat and embarked on collaborating with their new clients.
The high-end architecture firm reflects, “We originally designed the house for a different client, but they decided to sell the property and move to Florida. When the current owners purchased it and took over, we dove into understanding their wants, needs, and passions to bring their vision to life. They wanted to keep the fundamental plans we had, so it became about modifying certain aspects to suit their taste and lifestyle.”
After all, the impeccable design already achieved a pivotal goal: It was in complete harmony with the natural environment, a signature of Cardello Architects‘ work.
Cardello Architects is known for creating homes that are deeply integrated with their site. So, for this steep and narrow lot with a rocky beach, the topography was both a challenge and source of inspiration.
One smart solution was creating staggered, multi-level terraces for suave outdoor parties or lounging. The architects also repurposed rock shelf that was dug up during construction for the terraces and the stairs, embracing the setting’s natural terrain rather than using stone materials on the exterior that would look out of place.
At this picturesque Connecticut property, the new homeowners were especially excited about the process of framing the water and island views. That lead to rethinking the primary suite and pulling it out further to give the couple the exact vantage point they craved. Another key shift? The original clients hadn’t wanted a basement, but the new clients did. Cardello Architects added in a basement level with gorgeous living spaces for them, which required hammering out an additional 10 feet of rock.
With the floor plan and site mapping complete, the architects zeroed in on the 6,000-square-foot abode’s luxurious details. The clients’ top priority was to create a stunning sanctuary where their family could gather and make memories during the summer season. They wanted everyone to be able to have fun outside with boating, paddle boarding, jet-skiing and more. So, the Cardello team made sure to create plenty of outdoor storage opportunities. They also devised a large hot tub built into the lower patio, perfect for warming up after a day out on the water. This was all done in collaboration with Wesley Stout and Associates, who took on the beautiful landscape architecture.
When it came to the interiors, the homeowners asked for a clean and modern yet timeless aesthetic that emphasized their treasured views. Cardello Architects, Havilande Whitcomb Design, and Downsview Kitchens leaned into a soft, neutral palette with balanced splashes of blue and green throughout. Ample glass, high ceilings, and light-toned wood further accentuate a coastal, airy feel.
Crafting such an elegant and tranquil environment doesn’t just happen, however, and Cardello Architects goes the extra mile to deliver perfection. “Anyone can install shiplap, but the difference lies in precision. We carefully measure, plan, and examine every board, ensuring each section ends perfectly with a full piece,” shares David LaPierre, AIA. “Even when things are seemingly inconsequential, that level of detail is important to a true custom home.”
Another subtle display of their dedication to clients is the primary suite’s shower, which is flush to the ground. Since the homeowners are older, this was a no-brainer but not every firm considers their clients’ future and peace of mind as meticulously. LaPierre muses, “Our team doesn’t just pay attention to the style and architecture, but the person that’s living in it.”
With their long-standing relationships and depth of experience, the firm also brought in top experts like Everest Marble and Advanced Home Audio to supply the home’s beautiful stone elements and smart home technologies.
Authentically capturing the essence of the property and crafting a one-of-a-kind home, Cardello Architects once again showcases their design and management prowess with this pristine project. Over the years, they have honed their philosophy, method, and network to ensure the entire client experience and the final creation exceeds expectations.
The firm says, “Exceptional design finds the delicate balance between creativity and technical ability. Our approach is honest and explorative, tailored to ensure your enjoyment of the process through robust communication and collaboration.” To learn more and find out how you can work with their accomplished team on custom home endeavors, visiting cardelloarchitects.com.
