A cliffside home, actually the largest blufftop estate on Malibu’s iconic Point Dume, has listed for the first time ever with the astronomical price tag of $90 million.
The manse was built in 1991 by the late developer Ken Harges and his wife, Lorelei Harges, who purchased the 1.16-acre property for around $1.7 million and commissioned architect Jonathan Stout to design the sprawling home. They’d spent more than 40 years in the San Fernando Valley before making the move, and they brought a distinctly Italian sensibility with them to Malibu.
“Our mother was proudly 100% Italian, and together my parents drew inspiration from their many travels throughout Italy,” the couple’s daughters, Bonnie Furgurson and Wendy Geweke, shared. “They wanted something different—a home with balance, symmetry, and an intuitive flow that made moving through the main living spaces feel natural and effortless.”
Standing majestically with columns and a terracotta-tiled roof, the mansion indeed pulls inspiration from ornate Mediterranean architecture while adding contemporary elements. The central staircase alone looks like a work of art, while the pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the massive, museum-like ballroom with an incredible two-story glass wall and a barrel-vaulted glass ceiling. Meanwhile, the showpiece outside is the romantic sunken pavilion, which looks like it belongs on the coast of Sicily and offers extraordinary ocean and coastline views.
Built before today’s stricter coastal regulations and height limits, a home of this scale in such a location would be impossible to replicate now. It spans 17,701 square feet with nine bedrooms and perks like an elevator, pool and spa, palace-like gardens, and an underground 9,500-square-foot garage. Its grandeur and beautiful backdrop has made it a magnet for Hollywood productions, having served as a filming location for Austin Powers, The O.C., CSI: Miami, one of Jay-Z’s music videos, and more.
After over three decades, it’s a bittersweet departure for the family. The daughters say that while the home means the world to them, keeping up with a place this size just isn’t realistic now that both their parents are gone. Chris Cortazzo of Compass holds the listing.
