Renowned Designer Steven Gambrel Sells His Divine Sag Harbor Compound on the Water

Few places in the country have as much design prestige as the Hamptons. From high-profile historic estates to cutting-edge moderns, the residences there evoke awe. But, what also stands out is that so many distinguished design professionals own homes there, too.

Award-winning interior designer Steven Gambrel, founder of S.R. Gambrel Inc., is one such example. Gambrel’s longtime bayfront home in Sag Harbor hit the market for $25 million last year and recently sold for $21 million, per Behind the Hedges.

Records show that Gambrel purchased the Hamptons property, centered by a circa-1800 Colonial, for $1.55 million in 2002. From there, he made it his own personal project. Gambrel spent years restoring and renovating it to his taste, which is truly renowned. The astute designer’s style leans traditional but with clear personality. Art, color, and interesting textures and finishes all delight within his sophisticated creations. Especially, at his own home.

In the historic main house, the new owners will be welcomed by divine spaces like the double-height living room with a wood-burning fireplace, a chef’s kitchen dressed in soft tones, a classic yet colorful paneled library, and four blissful bedrooms, one of which blushes in bright coral.

Of course, sweeping cove views are also key to the atmosphere. Stepping outside, you can get a closer look at the landscape from the lawn, the deepwater dock, or the bluestone patio wrapped around the heated gunite pool. Beyond the main abode, 53 Glover Street also holds a guest house with an additional bedroom and a stone barn, which is currently set up as a dreamy dining pavilion.

Gambrel truly made this part of Sag Harbor his corner of the Hamptons, even owning 52 and 56 Glover Street for a while as well. The designer seems to be moving on, however, and also sold those properties in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Susan Breitenbach of The Corcoran Group represented the seller in this recent transaction, as well as his other Glover Street sales. Breitenbach has declined comment.
