A Designer to the Stars Lists His Own Joshua Tree Cottage for $888K

Coachella wrapped up this past weekend with headliners Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Green Day, and Travis Scott, closing one of the biggest music festivals in the world. If you danced in the desert and want to keep the magic alive, or simply long for an escape, you can do so at this stunning southwestern cottage in Yucca Mesa. Designed and owned by Todd Nickey, the co-founder of the AD100 design studio Nickey Kehoe, this circa-1951 mid-century modern is newly for sale asking $888,000.

The one-story white stucco home features two bedrooms and two bathrooms within 840 square feet, meaning every corner counts. The design draws inspiration from a Scandinavian fisherman’s cottage and a traditional Japanese country home. Named Heiwa Cottage, meaning ‘peace,’ it reflects the beauty of Wabi-sabi’s organic aesthetic, with elements like earthy tones, board-and-batten ceilings, and flagstone floors. The desert’s long, dry summers create the perfect setting for those looking to connect with nature, and the space makes indoor outdoor living effortless.

Nickey, who has worked with names including Natalie Portman, Sarah Paulson, and Mark Ruffalo, purchased the home in 2021. “The house was in a sad state when we first saw it, but the fireplace looked as though it had been waiting for us. It felt like it was from another time and place,” says Nickey. “We literally designed the house around, and inspired by, the fireplace.”

Set on five fenced acres, it offers private views of the cactus-dotted Mojave Desert and the San Bernardino Mountains. The primary bedroom opens to a sun-soaked patio unveiling a pool, a spa, an outdoor shower, and a native desert garden that truly complements the landscape. Just a short drive to Joshua Tree National Park, a new owner can take advantage of the year-round sunshine and dry heat.

Clayton J Baldwin of Kinetic Properties holds the listing.
