Doug Manchester’s Historic La Jolla Home, Known as Foxhill Estate, Seeks $37.5M

A storied San Diego estate has popped back up on the market, this time seeking a total of $37.5 million. The grand property, overlooking La Jolla Country Club, spans over 30 acres with expansive ocean views and resort-like amenities.

The Foxhill Estate was originally built in 1959 by James Copley, who was the publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune. In 2020, the Southern California compound was listed for $37 million by Doug ‘Papa Doug’ Manchester—who was also a chairman and publisher of the Union-Tribune and was almost appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas by former president Trump. As an accomplished San Diego-area real estate developer, it’s no shock that Manchester acquired the impressive spread and, according to public records, it looks like the 81-year-old is still the current seller. It has been on and off the market at different prices over the last few years, seen asking $49 million in 2022, and is just waiting for a big fish buyer.

The 17,000-square-foot French-inspired main house totals 10 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. A sense of grandeur and opulence fill the brick mansion, with interiors that are reminiscent of vintage Palm Beach or Newport glamour. A pool pavilion, an eight-car garage with additional bedroom suites, and a fitness center are a part of the massive estate.

In true California style, the property is all about indoor/outdoor living opportunities. The grounds include a racquetball court, a pickle ball court, walking trails, orchards, and cutting gardens.

Ross Clark and Brett Dickinson of the Dickinson-Clark Team at Compass, as well as Lauren Gable at Compass, hold the pricey listing. Clark asserts, “Foxhill Estate is the most prestigious property for sale in San Diego with 30 completely gated acres. It is the largest contiguous residential property in La Jolla and offers 270-degree ocean views, including views overlooking La Jolla Country Club.”
