Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s Former Victorian Manor Just Outside London Wants $9.4M

An impressive property on the outskirts of London, that once belonged to American filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, is on the market for £6.95 million GBP (about $9.4 million USD). The acclaimed filmmaker is known for crafting classics like The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and Barry Lyndon—all of which he worked on while residing here.

The Victorian home sits in Hertfordshire, where Kubrick lived for more than half of his life. He bought the residence, coined “Abbots Mead,” in 1965 and stayed there for 14 years with his family. The film legend then moved to Childwickbury Estate near St. Albans, where he lived until he passed away in 1999 at age 70.

From Abbots Mead, Kubrick could take a short drive to Elstree Studios, where he worked on the films, or he could manage production from home. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to own a true piece of filmmaking history that helped shape some of the most iconic films in cinema,” asserts listing agent Steven Spencer of Savills Rickmansworth.

The property sits behind wrought-iron gates, spans 2.4 acres, and boasts a 7,700 square-foot main house, a double garage, a single garage with a two-bedroom apartment, and a 3,200-square-foot guest lodge. Period details such as cornices, original doors, fireplaces, large windows, and high ceilings grace the structures. Delicate wallpapers, twinkling chandeliers, and spaces like a circular sunroom also set a dreamy scene.

Poised for hosting many, the main house includes a primary suite and three bedrooms on the first floor, with five bedrooms on the second floor. Verdant grounds with gardens, covered terraces, a patio, heated swimming pool, two greenhouses, and an orchard also await, putting you in a countryside mindset with ease.

Of course, Kubrick’s legacy is never far. A prestigious blue plaque adorns Abbots Mead as a constant reminder of his time there.
