Inside Out: How Amy Kalikow Designs Outdoor Spaces with an Interior Eye

Explore a Sagaponack project complete with al fresco dining areas, a sunken fire pit, and plenty of gathering spaces.

Amy Kalikow describes her designs as “clean, dimensional, timeless with a touch of whimsy.” Read on to learn how she brought this aesthetic to a Sagaponack backyard, with landscape architecture by LaGuardia Design Group, while “always keeping functionality top of mind.”

When designing outdoor spaces, at what stage do you get involved?
It really depends on whether it’s a new build or an existing home. For new builds, we like to get involved from the very beginning so we can help shape the outcome and design with intention.

How do you collaborate with the architect and the landscape designer on exterior projects?
We love working as a team, ensuring our clients’ goals are achieved while also being mindful of the architect’s and landscape designer’s visions. It’s always a collaborative process. Our focus tends to be on functionality and color palettes—how the space will actually be used and how it connects visually and emotionally to the interiors.

How do you approach outdoor design?
Outdoor spaces are truly an extension of the home. The design vision for the exterior should align with the interiors so that there’s a seamless connection. We look at the big picture—from how the home is used to how people move through the space.

Are you noticing any trends in outdoor furnishings or outdoor spaces?
People crave comfort. They want outdoor spaces that feel just as livable and relaxing as the interiors. So, style must be in sync with function—think cozy seating, practical layouts, and fabrics that are both beautiful and durable.

What are some highlights of this Sagaponack project?
The landscape designers did a phenomenal job with the layout. There’s space for kids to run and play, a charming garden along the side of the home and amazing gathering areas for family and friends. One highlight is the large dining table and stylish yet cozy seating area right off the kitchen, where the doors fully slide open for true indoor-outdoor living. There’s also a sunken fire pit area that’s perfect for evenings and a pool house equipped with a T.V. and both indoor and outdoor showers.

I love the sunken fire pit area. What’s the story behind this space?
The homeowners really wanted a cozy, welcoming spot to hang out with family and friends. Designing the cushions was a bit of a challenge given the scale—we wanted everyone to feel comfortable during long evenings outside. The fabrics, though light in color, are incredibly durable and blend beautifully with the surroundings. The end result is a space that’s both inviting and refined.

What is your go-to source for outdoor furnishings?
I don’t have just one source—every home is different, and I like to mix pieces based on the specific style and needs of the project. That said, I love working with Gloster, Harbour Outdoor, Dedon, and Palecek, to name a few.

How do you go about choosing timeless pieces?
I try to steer clear of trends and focus on clean lines, quality craftsmanship, and timeless materials. Neutral palettes and well-made pieces always age gracefully.

How do you incorporate patterns, texture, and color in outdoor designs?
I love using pillows, table linens, and dinnerware to introduce pattern and color. Outdoor accessories often bring in great texture, as do rugs and planters. These elements help layer the space and bring it to life without overwhelming it.
