Looking Ahead—Ad-dressing—Next Season

Time for a sneak peek at some of the “can’t resist” fashions and accessories we’ll soon be finding in stores

New York’s Fall Fashion Week doesn’t take place until September, but anticipating what’s to come, buyers assembled in town in early August for trade shows “Moda,” “Fame,” and the Accessories Show; they previewed some of the new trends we’ll soon be seeing.

Dresses were everywhere—the junior and young contemporary garments at “Fame” were draped and ruched, many with bling embellishment, lots of knits and jerseys. Long or jagged hemlines finished them off.

Topping the dresses and tattery skirts were myriad little shrugs — done up in fur, ribbons, crochet patterns, some fastened with bright brass buttons. Someone must have perfected the embroidery machine—many garments and scarves were trimmed with stitchery—even coats were embellished with needlework flowers.

Jewel-encrusted bangles and purses were prevalent accessories—shiny “diamonds,” multi strands of beads that look like rock crystal candy.  Fingerless gloves to facilitate iPad and Blackberry keyboards and big tote bags are here for at least another season. Scarves are frothy, wrinkled, embroidered, or chains of fabric flowers. Ballet flats range from pert red gingham to some encrusted with rhinestones; the popular plastic flats topped with bows and flowers make it fun to walk in puddles.

Whatever turns up next month at Fashion Week, there’s already a lot to fall for.
