In 2008, London-based designer Laura Hammett sold handmade cushions online. Now, she runs an interior architecture and design studio with her husband, Aaron, who is the firm’s managing director. It’s safe to say that the business has grown since Hammett was working from her kitchen table 16 years ago. While the firm is based across the pond, they have worked on projects all over the world: New York, Switzerland, India, Ireland, Singapore… the list goes on! In 2023, the design pro launched her luxury homeware line, Laura Hammett Living (which still sells throw pillows).

You have projects from all over the world, from Hong Kong to London, New York, and the Bahamas. How do you incorporate a sense of place into a project?
Incorporating a sense of place is so important because a home should reflect its surroundings and give a sense of indoor/outdoor harmony. For our Bahamas project, for example, it was important to the owners that aesthetic direction should not be too literal in Bahamian references, and though we integrated subtle contextual nods, there was an inherent sophistication to the overall design. They wanted a London-feel, but relevant to the Bahamas. So although some ocean tones and natural wood or shell materials were incorporated, they were featured in a very elevated way.

What challenges do you face when working on international projects?
There are logistical challenges such as time zones and sourcing materials from different parts of the world, but we’ve developed an incredible global network that allows us to overcome these hurdles. I think the key is to stay flexible and maintain constant communication. Ultimately, the unique challenges of each location are what make the projects so rewarding.
What was it like to design a private plane?
It was an incredibly exciting challenge! Designing a private plane required a completely different mindset due to the spatial limitations and specific regulations. Every inch had to be meticulously planned for both aesthetics and functionality, while ensuring a luxurious feel throughout. We had to consider how materials would behave under different conditions, but still create a sleek, refined space that felt as sumptuous as any of our residential interiors.

Paint or wallpaper?
I adore both paired together. Wallpaper adds such a rich, tactile dimension, perfect for creating a statement in smaller spaces or accent walls. Paint as the background—especially in beautiful tonal neutrals—offers a timeless foundation that allows other design elements to shine. It’s all about layering and adding interest with color or texture.
Go-to paint colors?
I can’t say its name quite yet, but my new favorite colors are from my own paint collection, launching in Spring 2025. It’s been so exciting developing the perfect collections of shades and I get asked all the time ‘What paint color is that?’, so I’m looking forward to launching this new category. Each paint will also have a corresponding wallpaper design to suit it perfectly, so the selection process will be easy and painless for our customers.
Do you have a favorite product from Laura Hammett Living?
I have a few favorites, but I’d have to say the Fabian cabinet is a really special one for me. It’s the first piece of LHL furniture or lighting I designed, and it perfectly encapsulates the essence of the brand, seamlessly blending that contemporary sleekness with a nod to heritage.

What trends excite you the most right now?
I’m loving the return to rich, earthy tones and natural materials like wood, stone, and metal finishes with patina. There’s a real shift towards creating warm, inviting spaces with a timeless appeal, moving away from overly stark, minimalist looks. I also find the trend toward bespoke, artisanal pieces—furniture and accessories with character and craftsmanship—really exciting. It’s about creating spaces with soul, that tell a story.
City or country?
I’m split between both! I used to be a city person through and through, but I’ve moved to the countryside and now I can’t imagine life any other way. I think the best interiors bring a bit of both worlds together—urban sophistication with a touch of natural calm.

Most underrated destination in England?
My home county, Hampshire—it’s such a quintessentially English place. The landscape is breathtaking, and there are some hidden gems when it comes to antique shopping, restaurants, and boutique stays. The balance of countryside charm and refined living here is just perfect. And the sense of community and village life is idyllic.
Favorite London neighborhood?
Belgravia. It has this old-world elegance and charm, with beautifully preserved architecture, but also an undercurrent of modern sophistication. Plus, it’s home to some of the best interior boutiques and galleries. We’re lucky that we often work on projects in this beautiful neighborhood.
