Midcentury Gem Known as ‘The Snyder House’ Becomes Highest Home Sale in Shelter Island History

Sleek, unique, and now off the market, Shelter Island’s ‘Snyder House’ has officially sold since being listed back in February. Closing for below its asking price of $14 million, the 6,000-square-foot home sold for $12.5 million. Still, the sale has now become the highest single-family home ever sold in Shelter Island’s history.

Built in 1952 and renovated in 2002, the sleek waterfront spread was designed by Bertrand Goldberg at the start of the mid-century modern movement. Known for the Marina City complex in Chicago, Goldberg pioneered the use of plywood in his designs. In designing Snyder House for John Snyder, the CEO of the Pressed Steel Car Company, Goldberg aimed “to create a design that would make a commonly invisible building material visible and take the stigma out of plywood.”

Talk about mission accomplished. Back when it was completed, the home was such a marvel that city dwellers would fly in just to see it, landing on the home’s beach, according to the late architect’s website. Still sat upon its own private beach with a 74-foot saltwater pool, the residence offers ample natural and architectural beauty. Walls of windows surround the perimeter of the house, where the new lucky owner has the chance to entertain in the expansive kitchen or cozy up by the stone fireplaces.

Nick Brown of Sotheby’s International Realty held the record-setting listing.
