An Organic-Style New Canaan Stunner Designed by John Howe Comes to Market for $4M

Only one hour away from New York City is New Canaan, a tony Fairfield County town that embodies classic Connecticut living. But for those who opt for a less traditional home, there are mid-century moderns sprinkled throughout the area, such as Philip Johnson’s Glass House. Right now, there’s a newcomer to market that seems to fit into that group in its own unique way and it’s asking $3.995 million.

It was built by John Howe, a mentee of renowned modern architect Frank Lloyd Wright whose creations inspire awe from coast to coast. Despite being brought to life in 1981, mid-century modern sensibilities certainly pervade through the home, which is no big shock as Howe worked under Wright for 27 years as his chief draftsmen. After that, he shifted his career toward making organic modernist designs through his own firm.

At this residence Howe created, huge windows can be found in an abundance formations, allowing the green from the trees to always color the 7,150 square feet of interiors. Stone and wood also define the spaces, harkening to FLW’s signature look and seamlessly connecting the rooms. The front living room has an unexpected element, however: The bespoke stained glass installment across the ceiling. Making it an ideal spot for a musician, the four-bedroom house also current holds a soundproof studio.

Outside, there are seven acres of land for a new owner to explore before the warm weather leaves. A Japanese garden and patio with a fire pit sit just off the dining room, perfect for enjoying easy-going nights under the stars. Chau Ngo of The Jennifer Leahy Team at Douglas Elliman holds the listing.
