Political Power Couple James Carville and Mary Matalin’s Former New Orleans Mansion Hits the Market

A New Orleans manor long home to one of the most famous couples in the political sphere has hit the market for $3.7 million. James Carville and Mary Matalin owned the picturesque property until 2021, when the current sellers picked it up. The bipartisan husband and wife are household name political strategists and consultants—however, famously, 80-year-old Carville has long worked with the Democratic Party, while Matalin works with the Republican Party.

According to the New York Post, Carville (known as the “Ragin’ Cajun”) and Matalin bought the home for $2.25 million in May 2008 and parted with it for $3.3 million. With the years that have gone by since then, the price has risen, which is to be expected as the historic home and its location are prized.

The circa-1906 manse sits on a coveted street near Audubon Park and seems tailor-made for stylish southern living. The residence is full of New Orleans architectural charm and period details, including intricate moldings and millwork, marble mantels, Italian plaster friezes, and original pocket doors. All in all, its 8,279-square-foot floor plan includes five bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and two half-baths. Entertaining spaces include formal living and dining rooms (which even features a hand-painted mural of the nearby park). The updated kitchen boasts a butler’s pantry. Plus, there is an additional prep kitchen in the basement.

The home’s grounds are quite a sight, too. Leafy, shaded areas and a swimming pool allow you to enjoy the subtropical climate. And when the indoor cooking spaces aren’t enough, the backyard holds a fully -equipped outdoor kitchen ready for crawfish boils. The oversized front porch at the front of the home puts a bow on it all, introducing the address with abundant charm.
