Pop-Up Fashions in the Hamptons

Lanvin recently invited shoppers to preview its autumn collection at a luncheon—under streamers of summer blossoms.

Paper flower streamers welcomed guests to the Lanvin “pop up” shop in Amagansett

A one-day Lanvin shop was set up in a cottage at The Reform Club Inn

Shopping for a red fox-trimmed trench coat or a black mink cape might not have occurred to some as the way to spend one of the season’s most beautiful beach days—sunny cloudless, breezy—yet Lanvin’s lovely pop-up shop and tented luncheon in Amagansett proved a delightful way to pass the afternoon.

Just admiring the clothes was excuse enough to stay inside. Highlights of the fall collection—the luscious, purple silk sheath, the rhinestone-studded black skirt, the jazzy red cocktail dress with a charmingly “tacked-on” skirt—attracted the attention of invited shoppers. Martha Stewart tried on a knit cloche with a big, jeweled brooch, and Olivia Chantecaille was one of several lingering over the reptile clutch purses and roomy suede handbags. Outdoors, beside stacks of teetery high heels, there was a rack of swimwear, including a hot pink draped swimsuit and a charming scoop-neck reptile one-piece for those who didn’t want to wait until autumn to show off their Lanvin fashions …

The setting was perfect for a summer’s day. Streamers of giant pink, lavender, and blue paper flowers led into the temporary showroom in the Reform Club Inn. Real flowers in similar shades marched down the table at a luncheon of gazpacho, heirloom tomato salad, seared sea bass, and brown-sugar yogurt panna cotta, with a berry pavlova on the side. Serving as hostess, CNN broadcaster Alina Cho, one of my fellow board members on Literacy Partners, greeted guests with thanks for supporting a favorite cause: Lanvin was contributing a percentage of the day’s proceeds to support our group, which teaches the one in five adult New Yorkers who don’t know how to read.
