The West Coast is no stranger to fabulous midcentury moderns designed by famed architect Richard Neutra. There’s the “Marshall House” in San Diego, a Case Study Home in the Pacific Palisades, and a bunch sprinkled around the rest of Los Angeles—including “Adler House” and this newly listed treasure high in Crestwood Hills: The Sale House.
Originally built in 1960 for Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sale (an engineer and an artist), the home has had a string of noteworthy owners since then. The Sales commissioned this rustic, yet modernist, retreat with soaring ceilings, a brick terrace, and original mosaic accents still apparent today. Three-Michelin-star chef Daniel Humm (the owner of NYC’s acclaimed Eleven Madison Park) was the second owner of this hilltop property. Today, Belgian real estate developer-turned-art collector Peter Galliaert is selling the recently restored property.
Before even walking through the front door, Galliaert—who also once purchased a Paul Randolph-designed guest house in Sanibel, Florida–had an instinct about this pace. “I felt the house before going in. Oh my gosh—this is it,” he shares. And, who could blame him? The pool alone oozes laidback midcentury glamour and so does the glassy, jewel box exterior.
Within the light and bright 1,632-square-foot floor plan, there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Although it has been thoughtfully renovated, period design defines the spaces. The kitchen is brand new, but purposefully skipped imported marble or out-of-place materials. Instead, it holds local, authentic touches that look as if they have been there forever. Sweeping views top off the property’s allure, with nature and city sights both grabbing attention.
For those interested in this piece of architectural history, Frank Langen of Compass and Dalton Gomez (Ariana Grande’s ex-husband) of Christie’s International Real Estate share the $5.295 million listing.
