Fashion Disruptor Sophia Amoruso Lists Circa-1955 Hollywood Hills Haven Built for Maurice Seiderman

Founded by Sophia Amoruso in the early 2010s, the online fashion company Nasty Gal quickly became a go-to for bold fashion looks and statement pieces, generating over $100 million in sales at its peak. Amoruso purchased the famed Maurice Seiderman House, a historic treasure in L.A., for $2.7 million in 2012 at the height of her brand’s success, according to public records. After filing for bankruptcy in 2016, the businesswoman (who inspired the Netflix series Girlboss) shifted gears career-wise but didn’t shift away from the midcentury gem. She’s ready to move on now, however, and has listed the eye-catching abode for $9.2 million.

Brought to life in 1955 for Maurice Seiderman, the genius makeup artist behind iconic films like ‘Citizen Kane,’ ‘Macbeth,’ and ‘A Touch of Evil,’ the 3,137-square-foot residence is set on a rare, nearly flat one-acre parcel in Hollywood Hills. It was designed by architect Clyde Grimes, a former Tuskegee Airman, and still serves up classic midcentury vibes along with enlivening, era-mixing twists.

In 2018, Amoruso gave Elle Decor a peek inside following a gorgeous renovation by Commune Design and architect Barbara Bestor. “When I bought the house, it had concrete, bright white walls like an art gallery,” Amoruso shared at the time. “I wanted to incorporate as many natural elements into the space as possible. The feel of a room is as, or more important, than how it looks.”

That philosophy flows through every corner. The three-bedroom masterpiece is flooded with light from floor-to-ceiling glass walls and skylights, and a perfect reflection of its ‘50s architectural roots. But, that’s not the only era nodded to in the home–bold wallpapers and jewel-toned mirrors introduce a splash of ‘70s flair. Other notable (and new) features include a Creston and Nest security system, an infrared sauna, and a two-car garage.

Patios extend from several rooms, including the primary suite, to make indoor-outdoor living an everyday occurance. The grounds are always tempting for basking in the sun. Lovely desert plants surround a saltwater pool, and although the space feels off-the-grid, sweeping views of downtown and the ocean provide a great sense of place.

Listed for the first time in over a decade, the fashion mogul’s historic home has come to market with Carl Gambino and John Bercsi of Compass.
