Montauk’s ‘The Stone House’ has made its way to the market, and is perhaps one of the most prolific estates on the South Fork, if not all of Long Island. Asking a steep $18 million, the new owners should be prepared to shell out for this unparalleled perch, but they also should be prepared to inherit quite the legacy.
Originally built in the early 19th century as the storage house for the Montauk Point Light House, it was converted into a private home in 1912. The Stone House then welcomed many famous guests as Montauk grew as an escape for A listers and artists. Andy Warhol, John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, and John Lennon all came to the estate at some point.
The home was later purchased by renowned interior designer Tony Ingrao, who owned it when a major fire took place. In 1991, Ingrao restored and rebuilt the stone manor. Ingrao also “found the remnants of what had been another house,” he told New York Times when discussing the process of rebuilding.
Today, from room to room and across the grounds, one can feel the property’s significance and its rich warmth poised for complete coziness. Wood beams and stone floors carry throughout the main house, while picturesque views can be observed from almost every point in the home. Given the long list of celebrity visitors, it’s no surprise that the home is also fit for entertaining guests in the rustic kitchen or living rooms, each outfitted with wood-burning fireplaces.
In terms of the its private spaces, there are three bedrooms and four bathrooms in the main house. The primary suite occupies a private wing on the second floor, designed to be a blissful retreat within the residence. It’s long balcony, looking straight out to the horizon, might offer the best seat in the house for whale watching.
Across the 3.2 acre property, there is also a separate studio loft, a pool house, and a pool amidst the lush trees. Not to mention, you can adventure down the stairs of the property’s rugged bluff to truly feel like you’re at the tip of Long Island and in harmony with the ocean.
Kyle Rosko and Marcy Braun of Douglas Elliman hold the listing.
