Jackson Hole, the affluent ski town, is definitely not short of cozy, luxurious cabins. A saucer-like glass house is the last thing you’d picture being in the wilderness, but this “living sculpture,” as the listing puts it, stands between the pines and alongside Snake River, ergo the name River House. Appearing almost like a superhero’s hidden lair, it’s an architectural masterpiece and it’s now asking a staggering $60 million, making it the second most expensive homes for sale in the Jackson area.
Dorros originally purchased the 36-acre plot in 1997, according to Bloomberg, which reported the listing in May of this year. After his original home was destroyed in a 2017 electrical fire, cardiologist Gerald Dorros commissioned award-winning architect Wallace Cunningham to custom-design a new residence with an extremely flexible budget. By 2023, this 8,583-square-foot marvel was complete.
“I wanted people to still feel like they were outside—the sun, snow and rain—and to feel the whole essence of the place,” Cunningham told Mansion Global. “Because the climate there is challenging, you can enjoy the warmth and coolness of the house while watching the world go by.”
The six-bedroom, six-bathroom residence is thoughtfully designed with two distinct wings: One dedicated to the bedroom accomodations, and the larger wing encompassing the kitchen, family room, dining room, and library. With an open layout and glass corridors, there is flow and continuity between the spaces, reflecting Dorros’s vision of an airy and open design that avoids feeling “stark and monastic”.
Floor-to-ceiling concave windows show off incredible views of the Tetons, while allowing for an abundance of natural light to pour in during the day. At night, real sculptures light up the property outside. The parabolic shapes are presented in the metal roof, but also in the kitchen’s island.
River House is part of exclusive Crescent H Ranch, which offers a myriad of leisure activities for homeowners, including trout fishing, horseback riding, and access to trails for cross-country skiing and hiking. Spackmans & Associates of Jackson Hole of Sotheby’s International Realty holds the pricey listing.
