Sailors, explorers, history buffs, and pioneers alike—this rare listing is for you. Its first time officially on the MLS, this private island in the San Francisco Bay is making waves looking to reel in $25 million.
The six-acre property known as Red Rock Island is located near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and is only accessible via boat or helicopter. Brimming with possibilities, Red Rocks currently has no structures but is already a nature lover’s paradise with a sandy beach, a rocky shoreline, and trails.
Red Rocks also has quite the history, dating back to the early 19th century when Russian fur traders inhabited the island. Selim Woodworth, who was a former California senator from 1849 to 1851, was the only known inhabitant. Woodworth built a cabin he used as a hunting preserve. The island was also used for mining manganese and there are still has mining tunnels to this day.
The seller is Brock Durning who is retired and lives in Alaska. Durning’s late father gained ownership of the island from his business partner who paid less than $50,000 for the island in the 1960s. As a child, Durning lived in San Leandro with his family and they would pitch tents on the island, hike, and fish. “It was always part of the family, like a vacation house,” the seller told the Wall Street Journal.
Durning also shared that there have been proposals to conserve the island and to develop it. Needless to say, the island holds plenty of potential for its next owner. Chris Lim of Christie’s International Real Estate holds the rare listing.
