A World of One’s Own Asks $12.5M in Hat City

Danbury picked up the name “Hat City” back when its factories were making most of the country’s hats. These days, the western Connecticut city is better known for Candlewood Lake, the state’s largest, and for the wooded backroads that make Manhattan feel a lot farther away than it is. Out on Long Ridge Road, a 1931 country house dubbed “Bloomsbury Ridge” just hit the market asking $12.5 million. And it’s now the city’s priciest home for sale. Not surprising considering it boasts a red clay tennis court, orchard, and pool.

The grounds keep going from there. Past the pool are open fields, woods and a vegetable garden, plus a separate artist’s studio with double-height ceilings, its own kitchen, and a full bath. Built in 1931, the main home encompasses five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and one half bath. A two-story library with honey-colored wood features a wall of windows that open to a patio on the lower level.

Double-height ceilings in the artist’s studio allow for a light-filled, airy interior with gallery-inspired wall space. Ascend the wrought-iron staircase and find the primary suite, complete with a fireplace, private balcony, and ensuite. “It’s incredibly rare to find this much land, beauty, and character in a setting that still feels so connected,” listing agent Cindy Raney tells dailyDEEDS.

For all that privacy, it’s close to civilization. West Redding’s train station is 1.5 miles away, and Danbury Airport is about a ten-minute drive. The listing agent calls the estate “a world of its own,” within reach of Manhattan.
