Designer India Hicks, Goddaughter of King Charles, Lists Longtime Bahamas Home Created by Her Iconic Father

Designer and entrepreneur India Hicks is selling her family’s longtime Bahamas home nestled on Windermere Island—a narrow stretch of land connected to Eleuthera via bridge. Her late father, the iconic English interior designer David Hicks, acquired the property in 1967 and created the coastal masterwork. It has stayed in their family ever since. Known as “Savannah House,” the home, along with an adjacent 1.32-acre beachfront lot (and its 150 feet of ocean-frontage), is now on the market and priced at $3,795,000.

The seller, a style tastemaker (who is a goddaughter of King Charles and was a bridesmaid to Princess Diana, might we add), once wrote that her father “built this alarmingly modern beach house, inspired by the Egyptian temple of King Zoser.” She added that “the walls, inside and out, are rendered from rough cement and the sand of the beach.” David Hicks then used art, texture, and found items on the island to add subtle flair to the clean interiors.

“All of this before he decided sand was too troublesome,” his daughter recalls on her website. “It got into everything, so he never returned to the house he built from sand. But we do.” However, it looks like it’s time for a new owner to cherish her Bahamas oasis.

Savannah House totals four bedrooms and four bathrooms across a 2,500-square-foot floor plan. Bold pinks, yellows, and greens pop with its artwork—and the kitchen cabinetry unveils a baby blue. Overall, the home shows restraint while being effortlessly playful. “He set the world on fire with his daring designs that other people were not doing,” the younger Hicks told Flower Magazine of her late father, whose projects included the White House’s bowling alley and a cocktail lounge on the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth II.

There is a separate guest pavilion and a deck with an outdoor shower and furnishings. The picturesque beach is then accessible via a lush, private pathway. The listing includes an additional lot—and this one is beachfront. Perhaps the next owner will want to create a compound, building a larger abode there and using Savannah House for guests.

Windermere Island offers the utmost privacy, as the island is gated and guarded. New owners may join the Windermere Club, with access to dining facilities, tennis courts, pickleball courts, and swimming pool.

Colleen Carey of Bahamas Sotheby’s International Realty holds the storied listing with loose royal ties and a strong design legacy.
