Around the world, New York City is regarded as one of the fastest, most luxurious, and most competitive real estate markets. The top brokerages here are a mix of newer firms, like SERHANT. and Compass, and long-established NYC players, like Brown Harris Stevens and Douglas Elliman. And, history runs deep in this glistening city.
Prior to being acquired by Compass in 2019, Stribling & Associates operated out of a Chelsea townhouse with quite a legacy. It’s known as America’s longest running real estate office since James N. Wells & Sons opened in the space in 1819. For the first time ever, it’s now configured as a single-family home and up for sale seeking $17.7 million.
Elizabeth Stribling acquired the building in 1989 after Paul Gay, CEO of James N. Wells, passed away. Stribling paid $990,000 for the property, according to city records, and held onto it until 2020 when it was sold by Clement Clark Stribling LLC. The lucky buyer, who is the seller now, had the vision to finally make this 9,422-square-foot office a grand Manhattan home. They renovated and reconstructed it extensively over three years to create the glamorous, six-bedroom abode seen today.
Stepping inside, a glassy entry with 20-foot-high ceilings makes an immediate dazzling impression. It features oversized windows, a sculptural staircase, and a halo-like chandelier crowning it all. As you wander further, artisan light fixtures continue to captivate along with fine touches like a Calacatta Gold marble bath on the full primary suite floor and custom millwork in the kitchen. However, the most unexpected element may be the glass atrium that opens to a dual-level rooftop terrace with skyline views. Now, that’s prime New York City real estate.
