Diane Keaton Seeks $28.9M for the Refreshing, Rustic-Chic Estate She Created in L.A.

It’s no secret that Diane Keaton has particular passions. Film, yes. Hats, of course. Golden retrievers, absolutely. And, definitely design and real estate. The Oscar-winning actress has often spoken about her love of architecture and design, which really blossomed when she lived in Manhattan’s famed San Remo building. From there, Keaton got into buying and reviving underappreciated, historic homes in need of TLC. This stunning property, which she completely rebuilt, is one of the most recent and widely-publicized examples. And, it just hit the market.

Listed for $28.9 million, the gated estate in L.A.’s Sullivan Canyon neighborhood near Brentwood is a Pinterest dream come to life, literally. In her 2017 book, The House that Pinterest Built, the leading lady and style icon reflected on transforming the residence. It was a lengthy three-and-a-half-year process, but a rewarding one.

As the title suggests, its design was largely guided by Keaton mining Pinterest, as so many home enthusiasts do. Architect David Takacs and designers Stephen Shadley, Cynthia Carlson and Toben Windahl collaborated to help bring her plans to life.

At once rustic, bright, modern, and inviting, the 9,200-square-foot residence doesn’t fit into one style box. You could call it industrial due to all the 18th-century bricks and exposed wood beams or hone in on its equestrian farmhouse-style flair with the barn-shaped exterior, grassy landscaping, and black-and-white color palette. It has a strong air of luxury, of course, thanks to custom finishes and party-ready amenities such as wine storage and a large pool. There’s also a gorgeous guest house, which positions the property for effortless multi-generational living.

But, ask Keaton her most beloved spot and the answer is clear: “My favorite room in my home is that damn kitchen,” she told Wine Spectator in 2017. With skylights overhead and a huge clock adding whimsy, it’s easy to see why.

Keaton’s homes don’t hit the market often, but when they do, they cause a stir. Buyers with deep pockets shouldn’t wait long to check this special spread out. Andrew Gulyas with Destination Home, Inc. holds the celebrity listing.
