Fashion Designer Richard Tyler’s Layered, Romantic Italian Renaissance Revival Comes to Market in South Pasadena

Acclaimed fashion designer Richard Tyler, who began his career creating stage clothes for Elton John, Cher, Rod Stewart and Diana Ross, is no stranger to color, texture, and creating a mesmerizing mood. That’s why it’s such a treat to see the California home he and his wife, Lisa Trafficante, have cherished for nearly three decades, which draws you in from every vantage point. It’s now waiting for its next steward on the market, recently listing for $12.5 million.

The designer acquired the over 100-year-old South Pasadena estate in 1998, but not in the typical way. Tyler actually traded his Hollywood Hills mansion (which was originally built for actress Dolores del Rio) for this Italian Renaissance Revival beauty. But, he and his wife are just the latest, longtime stewards of Villa Arno.

Dr. John Stewart Tanner commissioned architect Reginald Johnson to design Villa Arno in 1916. Before the project was complete, however, he sold it to Dr. Arno Behr, an internationally renowned chemist who gave the property its enduring name. After the Behr family left in 1931, there were only three more sets of owners before Tyler moved in, including a notable L.A. interior designer in the 1930s.

Fast forward to 2025 and the romantic property is still as ravishing as ever. It offers a five-bedroom main home, a pool, and a one-bedroom guest house amidst lively gardens. Colorful hues, Italian tiles, enchanting arches, and classical stone and ironwork all create an ethereal atmosphere that may transport your mind to a Mediterranean setting or to a bygone era of sophisticated salon parties.

Enhancing the enchanting aura further, Tyler and Trafficanti have decorated the villa beautifully. Layered and rich, yet vibrant and creative, the spaces are adorned with antique, collected artwork, light fixtures, and furnishings. Though it will not come furnished, the impeccably curated interiors should be quite inspiring for potential buyers who view it.

When asked why they are selling, listing agent George Penner of Compass shared, “They’ve lived in the home for 27 years, but with plans to travel more frequently to New York and abroad, they’re ready to embrace the next chapter of their lives.” Michelle Trafficante of Ashby & Graff also represents the special offering.
