Legendary Composer Stephen Sondheim’s Beloved Connecticut Home Sells for Full Ask

Stephen Sondheim, the composer and lyricist known for writing music or lyrics for iconic Broadway classics like West Side Story and Into the Woods, left behind a great legacy when he passed in 2021. A small part of that legacy, but an extremely personal part, is his East Coast homes. Sondheim long held a Manhattan townhouse and a Roxbury, Connecticut residence, both brimming with cozy character.

After both listed last year, they fared incredibly well on the market. January kicked off with the NYC property selling for its full asking price, and his historic Roxbury retreat just followed suit changing hands for the exact amount it sought: $3.25 million.

Situated in a quiet town that has ties to quite a few big names, the Colonial-style main house spans 3,700 square feet and dates back to 1792. However, its most famous chapter so far may be the one that just closed. Sondheim owned the property for nearly 40 years and spent much time there. In the listing photos, you can still see the music room he used and the warm spaces that were carefully restored and expanded during his ownership. Overall, the nine-acre estate offers this historic dwelling as well as a two-car garage, a hot tub, and a pool flanked by a one-bedroom pool house.

Graham Klemm and Carolyn Klemm of Klemm Real Estate held the listing. Graham, president/broker of the firm, shared, “We were extremely privileged to be chosen to handle such a wonderful home that was cared for by such an extraordinary icon. We are thrilled that the market responded so well to this wonderful property.” Indeed, it seems like this Connecticut beauty, as well as Sondheim’s New York City abode, got a standing ovation.
