Palm Beach Gadabout

Escaping the Northeast snowstorms, we spent a week in Palm Beach where, along with sunny days, there was art, literature and music to keep us amused.

Author Ann Leary Makes an Appearance

Showcasing her novel The Good House, Connecticut resident Ann Leary spoke charmingly at a West Palm Beach branch library about her life as a writer, as the wife of a famous actor and as a rural New England mother and homemaker.

William Moloney: A Survey of Works

The night after his wife actress Christine Ebersole closed her act at the Colony Hotel’s Royal Room, William Moloney took the stage at the Paul Fisher 433 Gallery for a one-man show of his paintings.  “Untitled” works in latex, enamel, acrylic and pastel. Guests included noted designer Carlton Varney, sculptresses Edwina Sandys and Stephania Conrad and local artist Bruce Helander who curated the show and whose own retrospective was held a few days later. www.paulfisher.com

Gavlak Gallery

Connecticut realtors Carolyn and her son Peter were among those stopping by the Gavlak Gallery to view works of former Roxbury resident Hugh Bush who has turned with some success from playwriting to painting. http://www.gavlakgallery.com

Art House 429

A few nights later a lively group gathered in Palm Beach’s emerging Northwood section to mingle in Bruce Helender’s ArtHouse 429 with its charming outdoor sculpture garden created by his wife Claudia and enhanced by Edwina Sandys’ fanciful sculptures.  Michael and Eleanora Kennedy from New York were among those ogling Helander’s varied work. www.ArtHouse429.com

Styles and Snacks

Designer Michelle Farmer invited guests to stop by the shop to see her elegant fashions. Snacking on delicious hors d’oeuvres, visitors admired creamy charmeuse evening gowns and night ware, a gossamer reptile print evening wrap, a silver column embellished with a melting pattern of sequins. www.michellefarmercollaborate.com

Music at the Colony

Described by the local paper as “probably the best place for cabaret on the planet,” the Royal Room at the Colony Hotel was featuring crooner Nicholas King.  After a meal of delicious snapper on the poolside patio, we wandered inside for an informal post-show singalong. Who should we find at the piano but New England’s own virtuoso Mike Renzi. www.thecolonypalmbeach.com
