Ringside Seats

Tabletops at the Millbrook Horse Trials.

It’s a feature of horse shows that while steeds and riders are competing over jumps, cross country, and dressage, sponsors ringside are vying to devise the most attractive table settings for their spectator guests. Annually, HC&G admires and judges the magnificent lunchtime creations out East at the Hampton Classic. This year we had a chance to admire table settings at the Millbrook Horse Trials, a world-class equestrian event held in that locale’s rolling hills.

A giant sunflower welcomed guests to the tent of Yellowframe Farm hosted by Event Sponsor Barbara Tober, who had joined Honored Guest Sex and the City’s Candace Bushnell, for a kick-off discussion of the values young women can gain from horsemanship. Under massive yellow dahlias, Yellowframe’s area featured tablecloths picturing horses while plates were crowned with napkins in gold horsehead rings. Other tables featured stallion statues jumping over blue hydrangeas, show ribbons highlighting a silver cup trophy. Helen Cook’s décor included flower bedecked dog statues, and one table was decorated in a salute to the Olympics, that other sporting event taking place an ocean away.
