Tour a Westchester Home With an Organic Kitchen, Striking Bathroom Design, and a Cool Entertaining Space

White oak details, statement-making stone selections, and a moody blue bar room fill this New York residence.

Westchester-based interior designer Justine Wolman is behind the interiors of this 5,000-square-foot home in Armonk, New York. Natural tones set the scene in this five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence, complete with lime-washed walls, white oak cabinetry, and stunning slabs of stone sourced from Dente Trading in Grove, New Jersey. And while the kitchen is typically referred to as the heart of the home, a dark blue, moody bar room has become the hottest entertaining space here. Tour the home and learn more from the designer below.

How did you approach the kitchen design for this home?
We wanted the kitchen to strike a balance between modern organic design and subtle traditional touches. Ultimately, our goal was for the space to feel comfortable, welcoming, and enduring—a kitchen that will truly stand the test of time.

How did you achieve that vision?
By incorporating white oak cabinetry, a plastered hood, and Taj Mahal stone carried all the way to the ceiling, we were able to create a space that feels warm, grounded, and timeless. The hardware and lighting selections introduced a more traditional sensibility, helping the kitchen feel layered rather than stark.

Is there a particular detail in the kitchen that you feel really defines the space?
The white oak cabinetry truly defines the room. We carried the material through with matching white oak crown molding, which helps tie everything together and gives the kitchen a cohesive, architectural feel. I also love the fluted hutch design, while it provides much-needed storage, the floor-to-ceiling fluted detail adds depth, texture, and a layer of character that elevates the entire space.

I love the pop of color in the pantry.
We used Benjamin Moore Blue Heather in the pantry. The main kitchen is neutral and refined, so we wanted the pantry to feel like a pleasant surprise. The soft blue paired with brass creates an unexpected pop of color that feels cheerful without overpowering the space.

Is there a kitchen design principle you repeatedly return to?
I don’t rely heavily on trends in kitchens… I want them to feel timeless. A kitchen is a significant investment and it’s important that clients love the space not just today, but for ten years or more. Keeping the foundation classic allows for longevity while still leaving room for personality through details and finishes.

Let’s talk about the bar. What led you to embrace color in this space and how did you develop the blue palette?
Early on, my clients shared their love of blue and wanted to incorporate it where it felt most impactful, and the bar felt like the perfect place to lean in. We layered different shades and finishes: A high-gloss blue bar, lime-washed walls, a mohair sofa, and a tonal blue carpet to create depth and richness. Since the bar is the first room you see when entering the home, it needed to make a statement.

I love the lighting in the bar! Can you please share more details about the specific pieces?
We selected a bronze-brass statement chandelier from Arteriors with cascading chains over the seating area, creating a dramatic yet intimate vibe that really pops against the blue walls. We also incorporated an oversized Arteriors sconce that reads as a sculptural art piece—the soft glow behind each disc adds a moody, atmospheric layer. To balance those bold moments, we chose a few smaller Kelly Wearstler flush mounts over the bar, allowing the lighting to feel layered and intentional without overwhelming the space.

Can you share more about the sculptural piece in the bar and how it fits into the room’s story?
The sculptural piece was something my clients brought back from a trip to Japan. It wasn’t originally part of the design plan but the moment it was placed in the room, it felt essential. It adds a deeply personal layer to the space and became that final, unexpected detail we didn’t even realize the room was missing. I love when a design can incorporate meaningful pieces with a story, it brings an added layer of authenticity and personalization that can’t be replicated.

What goes behind the decision to limewash the walls?
I love the effect of limewash and try to use it whenever it feels right for the design. While it’s as understated as paint, it brings incredible depth, dimension, and softness to a space. Limewash adds subtle movement and character to the walls, reinforcing the modern organic aesthetic I gravitate toward. It feels warmer and more tactile than standard paint or wallcovering, yet remains timeless and beautifully restrained.

The green stone in the powder room is striking. How did it influence the rest of the space?
Thank you, it’s one of my favorite bathrooms I’ve designed. The stone immediately stood out for its depth and complexity, with layers of green, rust, gray, and white tones running through it. Because the powder room isn’t very large, we wanted the stone to be the star, allowing it to fully anchor the space. Once we found it, the rest of the design naturally fell into place around it. The sink carved from this stone is one of those pieces you can’t help but admire; the natural variation and richness of color make it truly special.

Can you walk us through the design and material choices in the primary bathroom?
The primary bathroom offered generous space, so it was important that the cabinetry felt substantial and intentional. I love working with walnut—it’s rich, warm, and timeless; and we elevated it further with reeded cabinet fronts to add depth and texture. The stone used in the shower and on the countertops has subtle crystal detailing that adds quiet elegance and pairs beautifully with the simpler floor tile. Traditional plumbing and finishes help ground the space, resulting in a bathroom that feels classic, calming, and truly restorative—a place for my clients to relax and unwind.
