Late Artist Donald Baechler’s Charming Yet Vast New York Compound Spanning 126 Acres Hits the Market

The upstate New York home of late pop artist Donald Baechler is on the market for $3,995,000. The painter and sculptor certainly had an eye for beauty—after all, his works are on display at permanent collections at prestigious museums including New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Modern Art, Boston’s Museum of Fine Art, and museums overseas. However, you might not pin this traditional rural residence as the home of a Neo-expressionist pop artist.

Baechler bought the 126-acre property in 2005 and carefully restored and re-imagined it. Two years later, he bought a landmark-designated townhouse in Chelsea for $4.45 million, which was listed for $6.1 million in 2022 just months after his passing. Now, his estate is selling his expansive Upstate retreat in Chatham, New York as well.

The country compound, known as Spencertown Farm, includes a circa-18th century farmhouse, a barn complex, and a guesthouse. Upon purchasing the property, Baechler worked with Michael Hord and Hiroshi Sakamono of MH3 Design and Construction to update the Colonial-style structures and sweeping grounds. Wide-plank floors, original doors with antique hardware, and vintage lighting hand-picked by the artist add extra charm to the residence. Of course, there is an art studio, which is situated in the barn. Baechler’s bronze sculpture, Walking Figure, is featured in the yard, among others.

Oliver Brown of Houlihan Lawrence holds the listing.
