Street art and streetwear may have originated in New York, but Los Angeles was quick to pick up these movements and ran with them. Shepard Fairey, a contemporary artist, skateboarder, activist, and founder of OBEY Clothing, was a rising star in the street art world during the ’80s and ’90s. But, his talents and artwork have since had a larger stage. Fairey created the iconic “Hope” poster for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, and many other recognizable portraits, including a 2020 TIME magazine cover.
While you may be able to buy his prints with ease, it’s not every day you can buy his home. The Fairey House, as it is called, is an eclectic hillside residence in L.A.’s charming Los Feliz neighborhood. The artist just put it up for sale, asking $4.65 million.
Built in 2007, the contemporary home with a concrete facade occupies a lush double lot overlooking L.A.’s green hills and valleys. Walls of glass grace every room, while geometric lines create interesting angles and unconventional shaped spaces. Cherry wood is also weaved throughout, emphasizing the art pieces that decorate the walls and fostering a tranquil, midcentury vibe.
Spanning just over 4,000 square feet, the home is a great size and also spills out to patios and balconies in typical California style. The upper floor holds four bedrooms and four bathrooms, including a primary suite with a relaxing ensuite. Complete with a skylight, the bathroom is fully outfitted in green tiles and the same cherry wood seen on the main floor. Additionally on the property is a separate guest house, perfect for hosting overnight visitors or having a quiet creative studio.
Art is in the eye of the beholder, would you scoop up this cool home? Patricia Ruben and Alan Melkonyan of Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.
