Los Angeles is a drivable museum of midcentury modernism. Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, and Harry Gesner all left their mark on the city’s hillsides and coasts. And, some newer builds have daringly followed in their footsteps. Hollywood director/producer Jesse Bochco and his wife, production designer and interior designer Rae Bochco, tapped architect Alexander Liberman of AML Studio to create a Venice, CA home for them that harkens to this era. It channels contemporary, midcentury, and boho flair to deliver utterly cool California vibes and is now on the market asking $14.95 million.
According to a 2024 Architectural Digest feature, Ray Kappe, the celebrated L.A. architect and SCI-Arc co-founder known for his organic take on California modernism, was a driving inspiration for the design. With his influence as a guide, Rae shares, “All the decisions we made revolved around light and warmth. We wanted the house to feel connected to the earth and the environment, and also connected to the neighborhood.”
Indeed, the stunning abode, with exposed wood and dramatic rooflines, gives great reverence to the natural world. Anchored by warm, old-growth Western red cedar and reclaimed white oak, the classic post-and-beam architecture blends the indoors and out while also emphasizing artistic material choices and colorful decor.
Finished in 2022, the 6,459-square-foot residence sits on a rare double lot of just under a quarter of an acre. Of course, many decisions were made to develop the home’s craftsmanship, spirit, and character. It’s no cookie-cutter new construction. Custom doors, windows, and built-ins carry the midcentury spirit from room to room, while walls of glass find their counterpoint in custom-tinted board-formed concrete.
There are five total bedrooms and five full bathrooms, but the primary suite is a true standout. The ensuite bathroom is modern, featuring a Boffi soaking tub and brass fixtures by Vola. The spa-like amenities continue outdoors with a pool clad in Ann Sacks Zigelle tile and lush landscaping by Stefan Hammerschmidt.
The next owners can relax on the patios and in the sun-soaked spaces, both staples of timeless SoCal living. They’ll also get to be the home’s second stewards, and perhaps one day, it will even be considered a historic, architectural treasure. Layla Bodet of Sotheby’s International Realty holds the listing.
