This Chelsea townhouse belonging to Barbara Gladstone, the late art dealer and gallerist, is now for sale seeking $11,995,000. Gladstone passed at the age of 89 last June in Paris. Her obituary in The New York Times remembers her as an “art world power,” who represented more than 70 artists.
It only makes sense that the force behind Gladstone Gallery (with locations in New York, Brussels, and Seoul) would settle down in the cool, art-filled Manhattan neighborhood—just blocks from not one, but two of the Gallery’s Manhattan locations (with another on the Upper East Side). Clearly, Gladstone had an eye for beauty, and this historic townhouse is nothing short of show-stopping.
The West 22nd Street address is nestled between Eight and Ninth Avenues and dates back to 1841. Gladstone commissioned Annabelle Selldorf and Associates (who is also behind the Frick Collection’s 70th Street restoration) to reimagine the four-story Greek Revival townhouse. The home itself is gallery-like, with plenty of light, a sculptural staircase, and a variety of materials and textures. In fact, Gladstone displayed her own private collection (which included works by Andy Warhol, Rudolf Stingel, Richard Prince, and Thomas Schütte) throughout the home, which recently sold in auction at Sotheby’s for over $12 million.
Venetian plaster walls and white oak flooring allow artwork to be the main focal point. Light floods in through casement windows and a skylight, but there is also gallery lighting throughout. The townhouse totals 4,395 square feet with five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
For those looking to carry on Gladstone’s Chelseas legacy, Scott Hustis of Compass holds the artful listing.
