By the Sea; By the Sea; By the NYC Sea

As the Rockaway peninsula recovers from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, neighbors and visitors are invited to programs at a temporary beachside community center.

“It will all come out fine; I’ve learned that line by line”

were the appropriate lyrics; “Godmother of Punk” Patti Smith was the singer-songwriter; and her neighbors in Rockaway and dignitaries were the listeners at a ceremony opening VW Dome 2, a combination community center, lecture hall, cinema, and gallery erected to give members of the community a place to assemble and share their experiences recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

Built by MoMA PS1 as part of EXPO 1: New York and Volkswagen, VW Dome 2 invites organizations to schedule events in addition to the films,  beekeeping seminar, introduction to post-Sandy gardening, historical bicycle tour, open camera session  and other activities already scheduled.

Perched on the beach between Beach 94th and 95th Streets, the geodesic dome has a transparent side revealing a full view of the oceanfront where the boardwalk washed away. Tables on its outside deck allow visitors to bask in the sun before and after programs Snacks are available at a mini Dome cafe.

The list of events is listed at http://momaps1.org/calendar/vwdome2.  To schedule an additional activity, contact Nina Sweeney at nina_sweeney@moma.org
