Fashion designer Jill Stuart—known for her eponymous brand and collections of jewelry, handbags, clothing, and cosmetics—made headlines ahead of NYFW this year. But it wasn’t about the runway this time, it was about real estate. Stuart’s luxurious and airy SoHo penthouse sold for $15 million just after Labor Day, according to The Real Deal.
The five-bedroom residence sits atop the Spring Street condominium called The Urban Glass House, a name that describes its architectural aesthetic aptly. The 20-year-old structure was Philip Johnson’s final project before his death. A renowned modernist, Johnson is also known for New Canaan, Connecticut’s iconic Glass House, which inspired this final NYC creation.
Sleek and fresh as one would expect, the 4,266-square-foot penthouse boasts not one, but two terraces to give the new owner nearly 1,600 square feet of private outdoor living space. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the home, offering ever-present views of the Hudson River and the city, from the Empire State Building to FiDi. The unit, accessible via a private elevator, showcases clean lines but also jewelry-like light fixtures. Annabelle Selldorf, whose projects range from the Frick Collection’s 70th Street restoration to a late art dealer’s Chelsea townhouse, crafted the interiors.
In 2023, Stuart sold her Sagaponack spread for $9.35 million and later that year listed this Manhattan property for $24.5 million. After various price cuts, it was last seen seeking $16 million. While Stuart has sold the penthouse for $10 million under her initial ask, she still made a profit, as she reportedly purchased the penthouse in for $11.2 million in 2007.
Nick Gavin of Compass and Adam Modlin of Modlin Group represented the listing while the buyer remains unknown.
