Magic in Mishap

A happy mistake during a major renovation

The paneling in this bedroom (from the home in “Well Manored,” CTC&G January) was originally going to be stained with a transparent light blue wash, but by mistake, a white primer was applied. Since Anne-Marie and Linda wanted the grain of the wood to show through, they had the pieces sanded back down. The builders started to nail them up but before they had the chance to redo the staining, “We walked in, we loved the quality it had and looked at each other and said…done!  It was one of those magical mistake moments. It had the right amount of lightness and spontaneity that we couldn’t have achieved otherwise,” Linda says. She and Anne-Marie also called the paneling “pennyboard” because the space between each panel was created by sticking pennies in between the boards.
