Presenting Honors and Awards

It’s accolade season, with magazines, journalists, and women of influence being showered with awards for their achievements. What would your selections be for outstanding magazines, notable women, and news stories? Here are some of the judges’ picks.

Magazine Hall of Fame member Jann Wenner, emcee Katie Couric, and honoree Tom Wolfe at the National Magazine Awards

National Magazine Awards
What would you name as the best magazine of the year?

Cottages & Gardens and other favorites weren’t in the running, so this year’s finalists included The Atlantic, Backpacker, Foreign Policy, National Geographic, and Wired.

Based on issues that dealt with the water crisis, polygamy in America and new discoveries in the Holy Land, National Geographic was named magazine of the year for excellence in both print and digital platforms.

Other magazines cited for excellence in their categories were Women’s Health, Poetry, Los Angeles, Scientific American, Garden & Gun, and New York.

ESPN The Magazine’s issue on “Bodies We Want” won for Feature Photography, while GQ was honored for Design.

An upset winner was Harper’s Magazine, which took the Reporting Award, outranking both the New Yorker’s much-discussed piece on the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, and Rolling Stone’s “The Runaway General,” which led to the dismissal from Afghanistan of General Stanley McChrystal.

Writer Tom Wolfe was honored, while Dr. Mehmet Oz and David Copperfield were among celebrity presenters handing out the Alexander Calder-designed elephant sculptures called “Ellies,” in a program emceed by Katie Couric.

Women of Influence honorees Darcy Miller Nussbaum, Stephanie Winston Wolcoff and Jessica Seinfeld

Women of Influence

What women would you cite for significant achievement in balancing career, family and philanthropy? In a panel moderated by lifestyle television reporter Robert Verdi, three prominent local professionals were named “Women of Influence” by the UJA Federation of New York.

The honorees—Darcy Miller Nussbaum, editor of Martha Stewart Weddings, Baby Buggy founder Jessica Seinfeld, and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, director of fashion at Lincoln Center—discussed their careers, philanthropic commitments and the challenges of juggling work and family.

There to support the speakers were Darcy’s husband, chaperoning their three daughters in matching white dresses and bows.  Jerry Seinfeld accompanied Jessica, and Martha Stewart and Ali Wentworth were also in the crowd.  Instead of plated meals, the luncheon was innovatively catered with serve-yourself salad, sushi, and dessert buffets.

Peabody Awards

Known as the “Oscars” of broadcast media, the George Foster Peabody Awards recognize distinguished achievement and public service by radio and TV stations, individuals and networks.

With grace and humor, Larry King oversaw presentation of more than 30 awards at a Waldorf-Astoria luncheon; a lion’s share of the prizes went to productions of HBO, PBS and NPR.

Celebrity attendees included Christine Baranski of “The Good Wife” and Ray Romano, who said he hoped his award would induce his wife to start watching his show, “Men of a Certain Age.”  Yoko Ono attended to support the award-winning American Masters: LENNONYC. Actor Patrick Stewart, who won for the PBS Great Performances: Macbeth, spoke in support of public broadcasting.
