Famed Theater Director David Saint Lists His East Village Duplex Penthouse with Pizzazz

While NYC-based, theater regulars are often caught up in the hustle, bustle, and bright lights of Broadway, director and producer David Saint calls the East Village home. Though, not necessarily for much longer. The downtown neighborhood bursts with artsy inspiration, as does the character of his $4,995,000 duplex penthouse.

Saint—who has been the artistic director of the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey for 26 years—was the associate producer for the 2021 rendition of West Side Story, has moved plays like Proof and Spitfire Grill to Broadway, and has directed plays on Broadway, off-Broadway, and regionally. His accolades go on and on. Certainly well-connected, as well, Saint is the executor of the estate of playwright, screenwriter, and director Arthur Laurents (whose works include West Side Story, Gypsy, and Home of the Brave) and is the president of the Laurents/Hatcher Foundation (which donates over a million dollars to new theatrical works).

The theater expert’s apartment spans 2,049 square feet across two levels with two bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, allowing for plenty of privacy. A Poliform kitchen, powder room, 11-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a dreamy 950-square-foot outdoor terrace set the scene for entertaining. If the walls could talk, they would sure have a lot to say, as director Steven Spielberg, actresses Tyne Daly and Marlo Thomas, as well as the casts of many productions have visited Saint’s 14th street apartment. The piano pictured was from Laurents’ townhouse where Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim played their songs for him, and Saint found the original sheet music to West Side Story and Gypsy in the bench.

Sitting in a boutique building, a new owner can look forward to having a full-time doorman and a fitness center, while being just steps to neighborhood bars, music and performance venues, and vintage shops. James Foreman at Brown Harris Stevens holds the listing.
